And although Magali Harvey crossed with two minutes left to seal the win Smith hailed his team’s effort after handing six players their debuts.
“Having only had three days together I was very pleased with the way the squad have come together and developed,” he said.
“All of the six new debutants justified their selection. We came up against a very strong Canadian team that played as well as we have ever seen them play during my time with England.
“I asked the players to go out there and play without fear, express themselves and above all else give their best, which they achieved.
“I am confident again we will be very competitive and work hard to get our first win of the tournament.”
England now turn their attention to Saturday’s match with South Africa as they look to progress through the group stage and Smith admitted there is room for improvement.
“At times we showed real flair and pace in the backs. We built phases and our decision making was accurate and we threatened and the forwards competed extremely well,” he added.
“But we know we have to be more consistent with our physicality and attention to detail when we are looking after the ball.
“We have two more tough games in the pool stages with South Africa on Saturday and USA next Wednesday.”
