Coombs hoping for final weekend showdown against England

Wales lock Andrew Coombs has promised to do the business in Scotland next weekend in order to set-up an RBS 6 Nations decider against England at the Millennium Stadium on the final weekend of the Championship.
Coombs was a surprise selection for Wales at the start of the RBS 6 Nations but his form has been such that he was preferred ahead of the vastly experienced Alun Wyn Jones for the 26-9 away-day win over Italy.

England are the only side still in with a shout of the Grand Slam following wins over Scotland, Ireland and France, while Wales still have a chance of retaining their Six Nations title, but will need to win their remaining two matches.

Armed with the extra motivation of not only retaining the title but also ruining England’s Grand Slam party – Coombs insists the Welsh are more than motivated.

“It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if they did come to us chasing a Grand Slam,” said Coombs.

“They are a quality outfit and they have shown they are one of the best teams in the competition this campaign, so hopefully someone will beat them on the way to us. It might take some pressure off.

“But it is going to be tough to beat England, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they came to us chasing that Grand Slam.

“That will be in the boys’ mind (beating England). Hopefully we will be there trying to win the title for ourselves, so I’m sure it will be a magnificent spectacle for everyone on the day.

“We’ve got a massive job to do in a fortnight’s time up in Scotland – it’s not going to be easy because they are a class side this season and if we can get the result up there it will be a massive occasion back in Cardiff on March 16.”
