McBryde: Wales need to improve scrum

Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde believes there is plenty of room for improvement in the scrum as his side look to prove their RBS 6 Nations win in Paris was no one off.
Thanks to George North’s late try, Wales got back to winning ways last weekend and head to Italy next Saturday safe in the knowledge they remain in the hunt to defend their RBS 6 Nations title.

In Rome however, Wales will face a pack full of experience with a front row of Andrea Lo Cicero, Leonardo Ghiraldini and Martin Castrogiovanni boasting almost 250 caps between them.

In Gethin Jenkins and Adam Jones, Wales have two of the world’s most renowned props but McBryde believes scrummaging is an area where the Red Dragons must get better if they are to continue their mini-revival.

"To be perfectly honest, we've been disappointed with our performances in the scrum in the first two matches," he said.

"We are not controlling everything to the best of our ability. It is something we need to put right.

"There are always a number of contributing factors. There are eight people going hard at it against each other, and we just need to be able to control things better and take a lot of the other things out of the equation.

"We need to come out a lot more positively, ask more questions of the opposition and take certain decisions out of the referee's hands."
