Prop Mitchell hoping to return to action for Exeter first

Mitchell has sights on Welsh Six Nations jersey

While Wales' chances of retaining their RBS 6 Nations crown have been dealt a blow by multiple injuries to key players, prop Craig Mitchell is hoping to take advantage as he looks to return from an injury of his own.

Lock Luke Charteris most recently joined Rhys Priestland and Dan Lydiate as those ruled out of next year’s competition and with tighthead Aaron Jarvis also ruled out, Mitchell hopes to peak in time to gain selection.

The former Ospreys man hasn’t played since sustaining an arm injury for Exeter in their 25-24 defeat to London Welsh in September but with a return in the offing Mitchell is eager to put all the frustration behind him.

The 26-year-old however knows performing for Exeter first of all is the most important eager to put on a Welsh jersey for the first time since dislocating his shoulder in the 19-13 RBS 6 Nations win over Ireland in March 2011.

“My focus is on getting fit with Exeter and then we’ll see what happens with Wales,” said Mitchell. “I’m back in full training so two weeks and I’ll be up to speed – and I’ll try and fight my way back into the side.

“What Wales have achieved in the past year is massive and I want to be a part of it. The only way to do it is to be playing well for Exeter.”

“It’s been frustrating, especially after being out for so long with my shoulder. Then I came back, played a couple of games and then tore my bicep.

“It’s always my ambition to play for Wales and achieve great things with them.”
