Rougerie not giving up on international recall

Clermont captain Aurélien Rougerie insists he hasn't given up on an international recall despite playing no part in France's autumn internationals.
The 32-year-old, who has won 76 caps for his country winning two RBS 6 Nations Grand Slams, was dropped by head coach Philippe Saint-André after a start to the season which was blighted by injury.

He admits he was expecting to miss out on the squad which beat Australia, Argentina and Samoa, but is adamant he can fight his way back into contention, especially after his recent performances for his club side.

He said: “I don’t think it’s the end of the journey. It’s incredible that as soon as you turn 30 you’re seen as past it.

“I do my job, I get my head down. After that we’ll see. If the ship has sailed…

“I started the season slowly and it took me a while. Without being too critical, I’d have been surprised to be selected. It was new [to miss out] but not unfair given my start to the season.”

Meanwhile Rougerie’s Clermont teammate Lee Byrne is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after fracturing a bone in his back.

The Welsh full-back had been in excellent form for the Top 14 side and was hoping to break back into the Wales squad as they look to defend their RBS 6 Nations crown.

With Leigh Halfpenny also an injury doubt at the moment, Liam Williams could well add to his three caps earned this year against the Barbarians, New Zealand and Australia.
