Rhys Priestland
Rhys Priestland's injury has created a fly-half crisis for Wales ahead of the defence of their RBS 6 Nations crown
Blues boss Davies tips Patchell to fill Priestland void

With Wales fearing the worst about Rhys Priestland Cardiff Blues director of rugby Phil Davies believes highly-rated teenager Rhys Patchell could be an outside RBS 6 Nations contender.
The up-and-coming fly-half landed seven penalties and a drop goal in the Blues’ 35-24 Heineken Cup defeat to Montpellier – a timely way to put himself on the radar with fears Priestland’s season may be over.

The 19-year-old has impressed in his debut season since promotion from the Blues academy, making seven appearances in all competitions and displaying his versatility at full-back as well as fly-half.

Wales’ RBS 6 Nations title defence kicks off against Ireland on February 2 but their preparations have been hampered by an injury-plagued autumn international period which saw them lose all four matches.

And, though Patchell is uncapped at senior level for Wales, Davies is adamant the fly-half’s recent performances have demonstrated a confidence well ahead of his years.

“I suppose he will be in the frame now, his rugby is doing all the talking for him” he said.

“For a guy who is 19, he is outstanding. We have just got to nurture and look after him a bit.

“It was a good all-round performance but Rhys stands out for his maturity, goal-kicking and kicking out of hand.

“He’s got a great temperament, skill-set and a good work ethic. Rhys has go all the ingredients to become a very good player.

"His rugby's doing the talking for him and it's a case of we've just got to look after our players."
